The art of glass blowing is on fire in Asheville.

Asheville’s beer scene may have earned the small Southern city ample attention in recent years, but its deep roots in studio arts have been the main draw for decades. This summer, Asheville celebrates and shares its great love of glass with a special exhibition at the Biltmore Estate and plenty of glass blowing — and taps flowing — all around town.

Summer of Glass | May - October 2018

Summer of Glass | May - October 2018

The Summer of Glass is the coalescence of the glass community and cultural leaders, individuals, organizations, artist studios, galleries, independent businesses, museums, and nonprofits who have all come together in a massive collaborative effort to highlight both the historical and contemporary context of glass and its talented artists in Western North Carolina. Regional partners are working together to organize NC glass history exhibit, tours, events, exhibitions and other special glass programs from May - October 2018.

Major events will take place from May-October to coincide with Chihuly at Biltmore. Individual businesses and artists will have events ongoing. The Lexington Glassworks will be featuring our Glassworks Concert Series the first Friday of each month throughout the Summer of Glass.

The celebration spotlights the rich history of glass in this region, highlighting the many artists and their contributions and importance to the glass art movement. The region's historical incubator has cultivated a thriving community of glass makers and supporting organizations. A new generation has been fostered and is taking the medium to new levels. The roots of the contemporary glass art movement run deep in WNC and have developed into a story to be shared with all.

Maker Spotlight

Yesterday, I stopped by Lexington Glassworks having strolled past their open door a few times a week on my way to my “go-to” yoga studio Go Yoga. Having arrived a bit too early I decided to finally step into the space. Wow! I had no idea how established of a venue it was. I could always see that the product was well crafted, but the space itself was equally and thoughtfully crafted, too. From layout to detail they have created a mindful experience around glass blowing making it a blend of retail, education and cool social space. I’ll refrain from saying a whole lot more, but simply encourage you to visit. Their own space and website tells their story better than I so I’ll step back and let them take over. If you haven’t been — GO. They have a beer on tap and a schedule for live music. Cheers!

Why Asheville is a Place You Will Want to Visit More Than Once

Asheville is the kind of place you have to visit more than once. Each time, there is a host of new experiences to be had, which is probably why I love this little city with big city culture in the heart of western North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains so much. An eclectic city, Asheville is the kind of hip place that has an unofficial “brewery district” in the South Slope neighborhood – although there is much more here than just beer. Asheville is also a culturally rich city, known for its historic architecture, like the expansive 19th-century Biltmore estate and the domed Basilica of Saint Lawrence. And for its buzzing arts scene with two distinct gallery districts, the Downtown Arts District, where you’ll find a host of galleries and museums, and the nearby by River Arts District, where factory buildings have been converted into funky artist studios and boutiques and great shopping abound. Best of all, Asheville is also a foodie town, and I love the big flavors on offer when it comes to its vibrant dining scene.
